May 19th to 21st every year

The Mikuni Festival, an intangible folk cultural property designated by Fukui Prefecture, is one of the three major festivals in the Hokuriku region and is a formal Shinto ritual held at Mikuni Shrine for three days every year on May 19th (regular festival), 20th (float and portable shrine procession and middle day festival), and 21st (later festival). The biggest attraction of the festival is the impressive middle day festival, where a 6.5m-tall warrior doll is paraded through the town.

April 20th every year

This is the spring festival of the local Ominato Shrine, and takes place from the Ajima area to Tojinbo. The highlights are the rendezvous of the Funa Mikoshi and Otome Mikoshi at Tojinbo and the scene where the Funa Mikoshi enters the sea. This festival conveys the spirit of the local people to this day.

    Image: Somei-yoshino cherry blossoms at Maruoka Castle

    April 20th every year

    400 Yoshino cherry trees are planted in the garden surrounding the Maruoka Castle tower, and the park has been certified as one of Japan's 100 Best Cherry Blossom Spots. The Maruoka Castle Cherry Blossom Festival is held in April in the castle town.

    Within the park there is an exhibition field of approximately 3,800 square meters, where 30,000 lilies of 40 varieties bloom in June, and a Lily Festival is held, attracting many visitors from inside and outside the prefecture.

The beach opens in early July

This beach spreads out in the northwest of Mikuni Port, and is popular with families with children because of its shallow waters. In season, it also becomes a marine resort for people who enjoy yachting, surfing, and windsurfing. It is also famous as a spot to watch the sun set over the Sea of ​​Japan.

    Every year on August 11th

    The Mikuni Fireworks Festival, held at Mikuni Sunset Beach, is said to be one of the largest in the Hokuriku region. The underwater fireworks, a specialty of the festival, are a must-see, with beautiful semicircles reflected on the water's surface.

    The fireworks are launched in a spectacular fashion in the city on the first day of the Fukui Phoenix Festival, Fukui City's biggest summer event. They are rare across the country and are loved as a type of fireworks that can be seen in the city.

Early September

Dancers dance along to the slow melody and song of the Mikuni-bushi through the charming streets, about the width of a sash. You can feel the atmosphere of the early autumn evening.

Early October

This festival is held around Maruoka Castle in October.
In the main historical procession, the Gomangoku Parade, warriors in armor parade along with a total of 400 people, including mechanical doll floats and child slaves. There are also a variety of events, such as the Ojare Market stalls, rice cake throwing, and taiko drum performances.

It will be held at Fureai Park Sanrihama in early November.
Surrounded by beautiful shallot flowers, various events will be held, including sales of local products and vegetables and fun raffles.

Tojinbo is designated as a natural monument of Japan and one of the world's three most scenic spots. It is a place that can be enjoyed throughout the year, but in winter the scenery of the cliffs created by nature and the rough waves of the Sea of ​​Japan crashing against them is particularly impressive.

In November, the Echizen crab fishing season opens, and the town of Mikuni becomes lively.
There are also many food events, such as the "Echizen-Wakasa Kohaku Ajiman" where you can taste both Echizen crab, said to be the king of winter delicacies, and Wakasa pufferfish, a high-end brand fish from Fukui, and the "Mikuniminato Crab Festival" where Echizen crab is sold cheaper than at the market.
